Reliable service in harsh environments to manage vehicle and driver performance

JM Thompson of Cary, NC marked our first Construction Business partnership back in 2010. Through our fifteen-year relationship, we have learned much about the requirements and inner workings of a local construction company:

  • Construction fleets and their vehicles are hugely varied in make-up, environments and use cases
  • Ease of fitting and usage is paramount, this is not the day-to-day business!
  • JM Thompson is a proud family business, people and relationships are everything

Let’s explore these lessons in more detail…

Varied fleet vehicles

Construction Projects require diverse vehicular support, from Dump Truck to Case Excavator, Case 850 Dozer to Flat Bed. Different vehicle types require different device types, vibration thresholds and data provision. Our suite of telematics hardware includes both a rugged IP67 approved device, and a key fob/app combination for a mobile driven solution (as well as OBDs and 12v plug in devices!). From site to yard, heavy lifting to delivery, the construction industry requires a flexibility of product and service offering data access in desk, mobile and remote environments. Redtail’s one-stop shop offering/full-stack offering solves all these needs.

Ease of fitting and ease of usage

Each of these vehicles requires a different way of fitting our device. We have developed our help with this from manual (through our fitter service) to digital (through our Installer App), providing a step-by-step guide. Additionally, we have refined our presentation of useful data to present only what is required: Hours of use; location and engine idling time, for example. And more latterly presented both for desktop and app as mobile becomes more prevalent on site.

People and relationships

We asked our long-term customer how we are doing:

“We have been using Redtail devices, back-end services and now apps for 15 years on our construction fleet, and they have achieved astonishing reliability in this harsh environment. Our primary application is tracking hours of use and location and for these purposes, these units are ideal. No special connections are needed beyond power and ignition—just a firm physical attachment to the equipment. Redtail’s customer support is also exemplary."

Gratifying of course but actually more motivating. To keep getting and doing better to retain valuable customers, and of course embrace new.
