REDTAIL, Tint and Turo

Turo is a success story in the US. From Forbes:

‘Peer-to-peer car sharing has graduated from scrappy disruptor to serious scale. Gen Z embraces the sharing economy because it increases access and today so do plenty of older consumers with a Gen Z mindset. Turo, founded in 2010 and led by CEO Andre Haddad since 2011, recently crossed $1 billion in revenue on roughly $3 billion in gross booking value, with 350,000+ active vehicle listings and 3.5 million active guests worldwide. The bigger question now isn’t whether the model works—it’s how a marketplace like this keeps compounding (if you don’t know Turo think Airbnb for cars).’

A challenge evident from the many Facebook groups of Turo hosts is tracking and insuring their vehicles. Insurance both on and ‘off’ trip. REDTAIL began working with Tint, a San Francisco based embedded insurer. Tint is powering an off-trip insurance program designed with the unique needs of Turo’s hosts in mind. The two companies have collaborated to create a specialized offering, providing coverage for Turo hosts to keep their cars insured when they are not being used on a Turo trip. The solution protects hosts by covering business-related travel, such as going to the carwash, getting the vehicle detailed, and driving to refuel. The addition of our REDTAIL solution combining OBD derived data and host friendly data presentation has proved welcome.

Beyond insurance coverage, the REDTAIL solution delivers meaningful operational benefits for Turo hosts. By combining high-quality telematics hardware with an easy-to-use data platform, hosts gain full visibility into how their vehicles are being used both on and off trip. The system captures key data points such as vehicle health and maintenance metrics, helping hosts stay ahead of service needs and reduce costly downtime. Real-time alerts can notify hosts of excessive speeding, aggressive driving, or other indicators of potential misuse during a rental period. This level of transparency not only protects the vehicle asset but also helps hosts maintain safer fleets, manage maintenance proactively, and ensure their cars are not being abused while in the hands of guests. For hosts managing multiple vehicles, REDTAIL effectively becomes a digital fleet management layer designed specifically for the peer-to-peer car sharing economy.
