  • Will VAM drain my car battery?

    No. Although VAM is connected to constant power it is designed to go into a very low power state when the vehicle is parked. This is compared to the same amount of power used by your car stereo.

  • Can the REDTAIL Fleet Management System lower my car insurance?

    Yes, depending on your insurance company. The VAM is considered an Anti-Theft device. Most car insurance carriers offer policyholders a discount on their insurance premiums if cars are equipped with Anti-Theft devices. Check with your insurance company regarding discounts, typically savings are between 15-33%.

  • What type of Warranty does REDTAIL offer on the VAM hardware?

    Your satisfaction is important to us. We offer a 30 day money back guarantee; a 90 day limited warranty; and a 1 year warranty (with the purchase of an annual plan). Extended Warranties are also available.

  • How long is my data archived on the REDTAIL system?

    Data is stored and viewable for 6 months on the FMS. Fleet Managers can easily store years of historical fleet data by using our system to export to a CSV file (CSV files are easily read by MS Excel).

  • What types of reports do I have on the REDTAIL system?

    We provide many customizable reports online, including: harsh braking, acceleration, speeding, idling, activity, boundary, landmarks and more.

  • How do I use Landmarks?

    They can be used to mark Boundaries, destination points, customer addresses and/or offices that you visit regularly. You can run a landmark report to see each time a vehicle visits a Landmark and the duration of their visit.

  • What is a Landmark or Point of Interest?

    Landmarks or points of interests are areas, addresses or locations that you want to monitor. They can be added manually, imported in bulk, changed or be exported to other formats (such as KML, used by google earth).

  • How many boundaries can I create?

    You can create an unlimited number of boundaries.

  • What is a boundary aka geofence?

    Boundaries are used to keep track of where a vehicle should or should not be going. After a landmark has been created, a boundary can be created around it. You may also choose to have the boundary send out email notifications when broken, to any of the specified notification lists. You will have the option to create landmarks in different forms: points, rectangles, circles, polygons and polylines.

  • What types of alerts can I receive?

    REDTAIL offers multiple alerts, including, but not limited to: speeding alerts, boundary alerts, scheduled maintenance alerts and excessive idle alerts.

  • What is an alert?

    Alert is a feature to notify you via email or on the map when your vehicle(s) exceed a specified limit or threshold. For example, if you determine that your vehicles shouldn’t be driving over 75 mph, you can set up your FMS to email you a speeding alert when that limit has been exceeded.

  • Where does REDTAIL get the mapping information?

    REDTAIL uses Google mapping. There are 3 different views available.

  • Can I pay for my service plan monthly or annually?

    You can pay monthly or annually for service. There is a 20% discount if you elect to pay annually. Our service is all-inclusive, so there is one flat fee for service based on the tracking interval you select. There is no extra charge for any basic REDTAIL features or alerts.

  • What is the difference in 1 minute vs. 5 minute tracking?

    Your fleet vehicles are managed in real-time. The difference is how often the data will update to our server.

  • Who installs the devices?

    REDTAIL has partnered with InstallerNet to offer professional and affordable installation anywhere in North America.   • What is the minimum recommended screen resolution?

    The REDTAIL application should be viewed at no less than 1024 x 768 screen resolution, this resolution recommended to ensure consistency.

  • Does the REDTAIL Fleet Management System offer real-time GPS tracking?

    Yes, real-time tracking is available in every 1 minute or 5 minute intervals.

  • What kind of Vehicle Information can REDTAIL Fleet Management Software provide?

    Vehicle Information provides important Device Alerts, such as: Maintenance Alerts, Daily Heartbeat, GPS Blocked, GPS Tamper, GSM Jamming and Vehicle Battery Voltage Alerts.

  • What kind of Driver Behavior Information can the REDTAIL Fleet Management System provide?

  • Can I use my GPS enabled cell phone to track my vehicles?

  • What is GPS and how does it work?

    GPS (Global Positioning System) is comprised of 30 satellites called NAVSTARs orbiting the earth. The presence of at least 3 satellites is required to provide the coordinates to identify a fleet vehicle’s location. VAM transmits the location in 1 or 5 minute intervals over the cellular network, to the REDTAIL application and displays the coordinates on web-based maps in real-time. When the vehicle is out of cell coverage VAM will store the data and update the Redtail Fleet Management Software once in coverage.

  • Do the tracking devices require service?

    Yes. Customers can purchase the VAM devices for the Reseller and are instructed to go to a web-site link to activate the device. The customer is responsible for creating an account and paying for service.

  • Can my customers purchase Redtail directly?

    Fleet customers can call Redtail and purchase the Fleet management solution. The Automotive Click to Locate product and APP can be purchased ONLY through our reseller channel.

  • How difficult is it to install the VAM device?

    The professionally fitted VAM devices requires the installation of the power, ground and ignition wire and typically takes less than an hour. What about Click to Locate? Will my customer be able to easily install the VAM plug-in device? Click to Locate requires no installation and plugs directly into the vehicle or light truck’s On Board Diagnostic System (OBD-II).

  • Where is the OBDII Connector Located?

    The automotive manufacturing rules in the USA state that the connector must be located within 3 feet of the driver and must not require any tools. Look under the dash and behind ashtrays.

  • Does My Car or Light Truck Have OBD-II?

    All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be equipped with an OBDII port. In general, this means all 1996 model year cars and light trucks are compliant.

  • Can I use the Click to Locate plug-in device with the Fleet Management application? Or the professionally installed device with the Click to Locate APP?

    The hardware is interchangeable. The customer can use a professional fitted device and select the Click to Locate or Fleet service application and plan.

  • In general, how do Insurance Telematics Programs work?

    Insurance programs work by insurers getting a data stream from their policyholders that give them facts about driver behaviour and the relative risk that each driver represents. This can then educate the insurer which policyholders in particular need to be encouraged to change their driving to lower their risk and also, by using pricing, to encourage or discourage the policyholder to stay with the insurer in subsequent policy periods. The data stream also includes information valuable to the claims department and which can increase its effectiveness in expediting claims accurately and quickly – it is well known that time causes claims costs to escalate. It is for an insurer to first select its high risk policies such as young driver or passenger carrying, where there is more at stake and the relative cost of implementing the telematics solution is lower.

  • What types of Insurance Telematics programs does Redtail Telematics offer?

    Redtail offers devices and data that can be used for Pay As You Go programs that measure basic parameters such as miles driven up to the most complex Usage Based Insurance. Usage Based programs include a wide variety of means for risk assessment and combines crash detection, alerting and accident reconstruction.

  • What are the benefits of implementing a Telematics program at my Insurance Company?

    UBI is being used by leading insurance companies for a reason – Insurers are achieving better loss ratios and improving their business. In a competitive market it is imperative that all insurers start to introduce UBI at the right time for their market.

  • How is the success of a particular Insurance Telematics program measured?

    Ultimately by reduced loss ratios, but these are measured as a combination of: Good policyholder selection; reducing driver risk by educating the insured out of bad driving styles; assisting the claims department to be more effective at settling claims quickly; identifying and managing fraudulent claims.

  • Does the Insurance company have to pay up front for the telematics program? GPS devices? Data costs?

    It is normal to pay for devices up front and pay for data as it is supplied.

  • When will my insurance company see a Return on the Investment?

    An insurance company will see return on investment in UBI when: The program it is able to persuade policy holders to change their behavior. When policy holders can be selected or priced on the basis of the risk they represent, or when claims can be more efficiently managed. All these can start very quickly after the program begins. Where the benefits end is not yet known.

  • Do you have driver scoring?

    Yes. Some of our customers perform their own scoring but Redtail also offers its own scoring system.

  • How does the driver scoring work?

    Redtail devices monitor basic drive behaviour such as speeding, harsh acceleration, braking and cornering. Scores are developed to measure risky behaviour Scores need to be normalised to the relevant population and geographic region. For example, there is a stunning difference between the measured driving styles of seen in rural England and those of the taxi drivers of New York City. It is the differences in the groups that Insurers will be trying to evaluate.

  • Do you offer pilot programs?

    Redtail strongly encourage insurers to engage in pilot programs, as much to pipe clean their own operational systems as to test the telematics.

  • Do you do crash reconstruction

    Redtail’s VAM device is constantly watching data for signs of impacts. Severe impacts are classed as likely accidents and the information kept separately and made available both immediately or after the fact. The information can be viewed graphically via a private portal and includes time, place, and magnitude and direction of impact.

  • What is the granularity of your data?

    For insurance applications we offer data rates from once per fifteen minutes up to 1 once per second GPS plus 10Hz continuous accelerometer and gyro data, and up to 1kHz impact data during crash events.

  • Can you provide references from other insurers?

    References are provided upon request.

  • Do you have a solution already in place that is not customized or only requires slight modifications?

    Yes. Redtail Telematics has solutions out of the box. However it is normal for the insurance company to ask for a degree of customization, such as tailoring exactly how the data is delivered and how devices are configured.

  • How do you know for sure the person insured has been in a crash?

    Advanced algorithms are looking continuously for tell-tale signs that there has been a large impact. This is relatively easy, but the challenge is to reject false alarms such as pot-holes and speed bumps.

  • What are the pros and cons of using an installed GPS device? a DIY device? Mobile app?

    Professionally installed devices will always give the best data. It will usually be out of sight and out of mind of the driver, giving the best driver behaviour results. DIY or self-install device can give almost as good results, but a proportion of these will get unplugged accidentally, either by the policy holder or during vehicle servicing. Mobile apps are very popular as they are very low cost. However the data quality is the lowest and phones are not safely affixed to the vehicle, prone to battery drainage and have the ability to be turned off by the user.

  • What type of GPS devices do you offer?

    Redtail has GPS devices for professionally installation, 12V cigarette lighter do-it-yourself plug in and OBD plug-in. There is also a rugged GPS device for industrial applications that includes IP67 environmental sealing and long life battery.

  • Do you offer tech support?

    VAM devices, data warehouse and analytics are all fully documented. Redtail offers full technical support to qualified customers and ticket systems for active programs.

  • Do you have direct relationships with installers?

    Redtail has relationships with installer networks in the UK and US.

  • Do you supply your own airtime?

    Redtail has relationships with multiple airtime providers to achieve worldwide coverage at competitive rates.

  • Do you use only your own hardware?

    Redtail’s VAM is designed to be perfectly suited to our datawarehouse and analytics. It is completely re-configurable in order to keep up to date with developments in analytics. Redtail can easily integrate other non-Redtail devices as desired, although the same data richness cannot be guaranteed.

  • Can we get data via an API?

    Access to data warehouse is supported by fully documented APIs.

  • What is your hardware failure rate?

    VAM device hardware failure rate is approximately 0.05% per annum.

  • What is the lifetime of your devices?

    VAM devices have been installed in cars over the last four years and there is no perceptible limit to their lifetime.

  • Can you upload revised firmware Over The Air?

    Absolutely. This essential service is managed by the Redtail data warehouse and is fully error checked to take account of transmission faults. It maintains device configuration through the upgrade. By design the firmware is extremely compact less than 150kb resulting in very low airtime charges for each upgrade.

  • Why is Redtail one of the more expensive suppliers?

    VAM is a fully featured box and the firmware is under constant development and evolution. Redtail is proud of the richness and quality of the data that VAM can produce, and the underlying reliability of the entire service.

  • Can you do custom development?

    Redtail Telematics endeavours to supply standard products and data streams to optimize pricing. However every customer has its own requirements and these can be met from simple configuration changes through to full custom developments of hardware, User Interface or analytics.

    Redtail Telematics UK and US hold modest stocks for small orders but larger volumes of 2k or more are built to order, normally on a 16 week lead-time.
