Redtail Telematics was founded to explore the potential of GPS technology; turning location and accelerometer data into meaningful insight for consumers, fleet managers, and the insurance industry and beyond.

The company is unique in that it controls every aspect of the telematics supply chain, from design and manufacturing of hardware through to delivering the applications and services that turn collected data into useful insight for customers. This gives Redtail Telematics incredible flexibility in how it delivers tailored solutions to its customers.

Redtail Telematics has a strong heritage which customers can trust. It has built on more than 25 years’ experience in communications technology and electronics via its relationship with sister company Plextek,

Plextek is the development partner of choice for 300+ major global organizations, government bodies and ambitious start-up companies. It has a proven track record for transforming entrepreneurial ideas into successful businesses, including Redtail Telematics, Telensa Ltd (street lighting control infrastructure) and Blighter (ground surveillance radar).

Through its relationship with Plextek, Redtail has access to qualified experts in communications technology, as well as a much broader engineering base in the UK and beyond. This gives Redtail unparalleled access to some of the foremost thinking in the discipline of building telematics systems in the world. As evidence of this, Redtail holds patents for aspects of its superior telematics technology.

Redtail is a member of a number of industry associations including the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA).  ( and

Telematics for Vehicles explained

Telematics is a way of monitoring the location, movements, status, and potentially any other system within a vehicle that could inform you about the behaviour or performance of a vehicle or fleet of vehicles.  This is achieved through a combination of GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope and cellular technology installed in each vehicle, which then communicates with Redtail’s DataWarehouse, to deliver insights that consumers, fleet managers and insurers need to make informed decisions.

In addition to location data, a telematics system reveals a vehicle’s status, performance and how it is being driven – from simple indicators such as speed, location and engine activity, to whether the car is transporting passengers in the back seats and lots more. If a car crashes, it enables you to digitally retrace the chain of events to help assess the cause of the incident, recreate the crash and review the crash dynamics.

This information can be used for a wide range of applications, from keeping track of a fleet of vehicles to optimize their use and performance, through to helping insurers calculate the most compelling premiums for their customers based on a better understanding of their risk profiles. And of course, consumers can use it to keep track of their vehicles, and help find them if they are stolen.
